Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque

One can’t help but to notice Brunei Darussalam’s iconic landmark in the city centre of Bandar Seri Begawan – the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Completed in 1958, it was named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, Al-Marhum Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, during his reign. This architectural wonder is considered one of the most beautiful pieces in Southeast Asia. It boasts an area of 225 feet in length and 86 feet in width, and can accommodate up to approximately 3,000 worshippers at any given time. With influences of the Mughal architectural style in India, this opulent mosque uses materials sourced from all over the worl - fitted with gold mosaic and trimmings, lush carpets, columns of elegant marble and colourful stained glass windows. The magnificent structure sits in the middle of an artificial lagoon with a replica of a 16th Century ancient royal barge next to it known as “Mahaligai” where mirror images of the mosque and the barge can be seen reflecting peacefully in the waters below it.
